SUSPECT ID'D IN OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING IN WINTON

12312305_10200927002493016_1688094159_nWINTON, CA - 40-year-old Humberto Lemus has been identified as the suspect who was shot by an Atwater PD officer earlier this morning following a high-speed chase. The suspect was taken to a Modesto hospital where he was treated for his wounds and released to authorities to be booked in to the county jail on several allegations, including assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.

Lemus's injuries are not considered life threatening the Merced County Sheriff stated.

An Atwater police officer was injured this morning, apparently after his vehicle was “rammed” during a vehicle pursuit that ended when police opened fire and shot one person,

Atwater Police have reported that the suspect "rammed" his vehicle into an Atwater PD vehicle causing injury to Officer Jose Torres.

Officers said the pursuit started around 8 a.m. after a black Chevrolet Silverado was seen by Atwater PD officers speeding in the area of Shaffer Road in Atwater. The officers pursued the vehicle into the Winton area before the vehicle pulled over briefly then sped away again, Lt. Samuel Joseph stated.

The suspect was approaching the railroad tracks in the area of Sante Fe and Olive in Winton just as a police officer decided to use his vehicle to strike the suspect’s Silverado ending the chase, police said.

According to APD an Atwater police officer got out of his patrol car, and began shouting orders toward the male driver,

“The suspect then drove directly at the officer and the officer opened fire to protect himself,” Lt. Joseph said.

This is the second time an officer has been involved in a shooting this year in Atwater.

The CHP and Merced County Sheriff's department helped in the effort to apprehend the suspect.
