ATWATER, CA - Two Atwater Police cruisers were damaged just after officers attempted to stop a Toyota occupied by two males. But the driver is alleged to have attempted to evade officers and drove through a stop sign on Shaffer Road in Atwater. Authorities were called to the in the 3300 block of Peninsula Drive just after midnight this morning in regards to reports that a suspicious Toyota had been circling in the area.
As the driver neared a gated community with officers in pursuit, the Toyota driver hit a K9-unit police car on the side then crashed head-on into an additional police car which ended the chase.
Mark Guzman, 18, of Atwater was taken into custody as well as the passenger, Brandon Humbert, 20, of Le Grand. Mark was arrested with a neck brace from a previous accident and complained of pain. Paramedics checked both men.
Both were taken into custody on suspicion of felony evading police, and several traffic violations.
Both officers were back on duty after suffering minor injuries.
